Altitude Variation in Langtang Trek

On Langtang trek, your journey starts from Kathmandu valley (1400 meters) to the highest point of Langtang region, Kang Jin Gompa (3900 meters). That means Langtang trek altitude goes from 1400 to 3900 m elevation.

Kathmandu which is situated at the height of 1440 meters is the starting point of your Langtang trek. On the first day, you will be traveling to Syabru Besi (1460 meters) by local bus or private jeep which takes nearly 6-7 hours. Only 60 meters is the altitude gain on the first day. The climate in Syabru Besi is just similar to Kathmandu so that there might not be a problem for adjusting to the weather.

This is the second day of your trek in Langtang valley. On this trek, you will hike to Lama Hotel which is situated at the elevation of 2560 meters. On this day you will gain a total altitude of 1120 meters. You have to walk nearly 7-8 hours including Lunch on the trekking trails.

Walking on your own pace and enjoying the awesome view of the Himalayas, rhododendron forests is the one and only option for making your trek easy. Day 3: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village

On the third day, you will hike from Lama Hotel to Langtang Village which is situated at the height of 3430 meters. On this day you will gain 870 meters after a hard walk of 6-7 hours. Your day will start by climbing Ghoda Tabela which is 432 meters up.

From Ghoda Tabela, you will start hiking to the Langtang village where you will gain an altitude of 438 meters. After reaching Langtang village you will spend a night in the lap of mountains and hillocks. 

Day 4: Langtang Village to Kang Jin Gompa

This is the fourth day of your trek to the Langtang region. This day you will hike to the highest point in the Langtang region, Kang Jin Gompa which is situated at the elevation of 3,900 meters. After reaching the Kang Jin Gompa you can explore monasteries, Yak Cheese Factory, and no doubt, the natural beauty of this region.

On this day you will gain only the elevation of 470 meters which is just half of the altitude gain of the rest of the days. Even though you are gaining a small altitude and short time for the trek, you should consider walking slowly and reaching the highest point in this region. 

Day 5: Kang Jin Gompa to Lama Hotel

After exploring Kang Jin Gompa, on the fifth day, you will return back to Lama Hotel (2560 meters). From Kang Jin Gompa you will return back walking for 6-7 hours to lose an elevation of 1340 meters. It is easy to walk downhill rather than walking on the high hills.

But, there might be pressure on your knee and ankles which might be a problem while walking. Wearing Kneecaps and using trekking poles is the only option to be free from such pain. 

Day 6: Lama Hotel to Syabru Besi

This is the sixth day of trekking in the Langtang region. On this day, you will return back to Syabru Besi from Lama Hotel which is situated at 1,110 meters. Walking for 5-6 hours you will descend down a hill. Like the previous day, you can wear Kneecap and trekking poles to be free from Knee and ankles pain. This day symbolizes the end of your trekking. 

Day 7: Syabru Besi to Kathmandu

This is the last day of your trek in the Langtang region. On this day you will drive back to Kathmandu valley taking 6-7 hours on a local bus. You will lose 60 meters altitude from Syabru Besi to Kathmandu. 

Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness is one of the risky problems that can cause in high altitude. In the case of the Langtang trek, there is less chance of having altitude sickness. But, if you are from sea level then there might be a problem of altitude sickness. It might be difficult for you to adjust to the change in temperature and oxygen.

To avoid altitude sickness, you need to drink plenty of water while hiking in a higher elevation. Always consume food that provides energy, proteins, and carbohydrates to your body. Here are some of the symptoms of altitude sickness:

  • Feeling uneasiness
  • Difficult in breathing
  • Intense headache
  • Increase in heart rates
  • Vomiting
  • Light-headache
  • Difficult while sleeping.

In case if you feel such symptoms immediately tell your guide to further treatment. Once if you feel such things then do not try to ascend furthermore. It is necessary to take a rest for 1 day if you feel such difficulty while trekking in higher elevation.
